Gunnison Valley Health (GVH) has proudly received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Silver quality achievement award. This recognition underscores GVH's commitment to providing stroke patients with the most appropriate and effective treatment based on nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. This adherence to high standards leads to more lives saved and a reduction in disability among stroke patients.
Stroke ranks as the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. It occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is obstructed by a clot or ruptures. This disruption prevents parts of the brain from receiving the necessary blood and oxygen, resulting in the death of brain cells. Early detection and timely treatment are crucial in improving survival rates, reducing disability, and accelerating recovery.
The Get With The Guidelines initiative leverages the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to support hospitals nationwide. It ensures patient care aligns with the latest research and evidence-based guidelines. The program promotes consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can significantly minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.
“Gunnison Valley Health is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Nicole Huff, Chief Nursing Officer. “Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to apply proven knowledge and guidelines daily, which studies show can help patients recover better. Our ultimate goal is to ensure more people in the Gunnison Valley can experience longer, healthier lives.”
“We are incredibly pleased to recognize Gunnison Valley Health for its commitment to caring for patients with stroke,” said Steven Messe, M.D., volunteer chairperson of the American Heart Association Stroke System of Care Advisory Group and professor of neurology and director of fellowships of neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. “Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates – a win for health care systems, families and communities.”
Each year, hospitals participating in the Get With The Guidelines program qualify for awards by demonstrating their dedication to providing high-quality stroke care. Beyond following treatment guidelines, participants also educate patients to help them manage their health and recovery at home.
