Staying Healthy Amid Rising Flu Cases: Tips from Gunnison Valley Health

As of February 2025, the United States is experiencing one of its most severe flu seasons in over a decade. On the first of the month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that 8.3 percent of healthcare visits to emergency rooms were attributed to the flu, not including other respiratory illnesses. A level not seen since the 2009-2010 swine flu pandemic. By February 21, the CDC reported approximately 33 million flu cases, leading to 430,000 hospitalizations and 19,000 deaths nationwide just this season.

In our rural community, the impact of viruses like this can be drastic. Dr. Anderson, an internal medicine specialist at Gunnison Valley Health's Family Medicine Clinic, emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to safeguard our health.

Understanding the Surge

The current flu strain has proven particularly virulent, contributing to increased hospital admissions across the country. Factors such as reduced vaccination rates and the relaxation of pandemic-related precautions have likely played a role in this surge of cases.

Preventive Measures to Stay Healthy

Dr. Anderson offers several recommendations to help community members protect themselves and others:

  1. Get Vaccinated: "The annual flu vaccine remains the most effective tool in preventing influenza," says Dr. Anderson. "It's not too late to get vaccinated, and doing so can significantly reduce your risk of severe illness. We recommend it for everyone over 6 months old."
  2. Practice Good Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps eliminate germs. Using hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol is a good alternative when soap and water are unavailable. Dr. Anderson advises, “to make it easier, pick your favorite song and replay the chorus in your head. An easy one is to sing happy birthday in your head twice. Or go for Queen’s We Will Rock You line three times or whatever your favorite chorus is that adds up to about 20 seconds.”
  3. Avoid Close Contact: Maintain a safe distance from individuals who are sick. If you are ill, stay home to prevent spreading the virus to others. If you are sick and unable to stay home, wear a mask to help prevent transmission. Wearing masks helps protect you, and those around you with weaker immune systems.
  4. Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Use a tissue or the crook of your elbow to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly and wash your hands immediately afterward.
  5. Strengthen Your Immune System: "A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, adequate sleep and stress management can bolster your immune defenses," advises Dr. Anderson.
