Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: Prevention Starts with You

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to highlight the importance of early detection, prevention and access to expert care. At Gunnison Valley Health (GVH), we are proud to provide exceptional local services, including the specialized expertise of Dr. Augustine Lee, a board-certified surgeon in general, colon and rectal surgery.

Colorectal Cancer: A Preventable Threat

Colorectal cancer, which includes cancers of the colon and rectum, is one of the most common and deadliest cancers in the United States. However, it is also one of the most preventable. Regular screenings, like colonoscopies, can detect and remove precancerous polyps before they become cancerous. In addition, healthy lifestyle choices – such as eating a fiber-rich diet, staying physically active, avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol – can significantly reduce your risk. Despite these preventative tools, according to the American Cancer Society, about one in five cases are diagnosed in individuals under age 50, making early and proactive action more important than ever.

Prevention Starts with You

Reducing the risk of colorectal cancer begins with awareness and action:

  • Screenings Save Lives: Colonoscopies are the gold standard for colorectal cancer prevention. This procedure not only detects cancer early but also allows doctors to remove precancerous polyps before they become life-threatening. Routine screenings are recommended starting at age 45 for individuals at average risk.
  • Healthy Habits Matter: A fiber-rich diet, regular physical activity, limiting alcohol intake and avoiding tobacco use can significantly reduce colorectal cancer risk. However, genetics also play a role, individuals with a family history should discuss personalized screening plans with their primary care provider.

Understanding Treatment Options

When detected early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable. The five-year survival rate for early-stage disease is about 90%. However, symptoms often don’t appear until later stages, making early detection through screening crucial.

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery: For early-stage cancers or polyps, surgery may be performed during a colonoscopy – minimizing the need for extensive procedures.
  • Chemotherapy and Radiation: These treatments may be used in conjunction with surgery for more advanced cases.
  • Targeted and Immunotherapies: New therapies specifically target cancer cells or help the immune system fight the disease more effectively.
