Gunnison Valley Health (GVH) is proud to announce that Dr. William Gattis, a board-certified family medicine physician at the GVH Family Medicine Clinic, has completed the Primary Care Psychiatry Fellowship through the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. This nationally recognized fellowship equips primary care providers with advanced skills to assess, diagnose and manage common psychiatric conditions within a primary care setting.
“This fellowship is an important step in helping close the gap between mental and physical health care in rural communities,” Gattis said. “I’m excited to put this training into practice and better support the behavioral health needs of my patients here in the Gunnison Valley.”
Integrating behavioral health into primary care has become increasingly vital, especially in rural areas where access to mental health specialists can be limited. Studies show that the majority of mental health conditions are first identified in a primary care setting. By equipping primary care providers with tools to confidently manage common psychiatric concerns, health systems can offer earlier intervention, reduce stigma, improve patient outcomes and ensure more holistic care.
The Primary Care Psychiatry Fellowship addresses this need by preparing primary care providers to deliver front-line psychiatric care. Fellows learn practical, evidence-based approaches to managing conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and substance use disorders, enhancing the reach and effectiveness of community-based care.
“We are thrilled to support Dr. Gattis’s continued professional growth and commitment to our community’s well-being,” said Gunnison Valley Health CEO Jason Amrich. “His expertise and training further strengthen our ability to provide comprehensive, compassionate care close to home.”
Dr. Gattis sees patients of all ages at the GVH Family Medicine Clinic. To schedule an appointment, call 970-641-8410 or visit www.gunnisonvalleyhealth.org.
