Diagnostic Test For Breast Cancer
If your mammogram is abnormal or anomalies are identified, the next step is to undertake a breast biopsy. Needing a breast biopsy doesn’t necessarily mean you have cancer. Most biopsy results are not cancer, but this procedure is the only way to find out for sure.
What is a breast biopsy?
A breast biopsy is when a small amount of breast tissue is removed with a special biopsy needle and checked in a lab to see if cancer or other abnormal cells are present.
Why would I need a breast biopsy?
There may be many reasons your physician, in conjunction with a radiologist, recommends a breast biopsy. Some examples include:
- Check a lump or mass that can be felt (is palpable) in the breast
- Check a problem seen on a mammogram, such as small calcium deposits in breast tissue (micro calcifications) or a fluid-filled mass (cyst)
- Check a lump or mass that cannot be felt (non-palpable) in the breast
- Evaluate nipple problems, such as a bloody discharge from the nipple
- Find out if a breast lump or mass is cancer (malignant) or not cancer (benign)
What equipment does Gunnison Valley Health use?
At Gunnison Valley Health, we use the latest equipment thanks to the support of Tough Enough To Wear Pink. The stereotactic breast biopsy technology precisely identifies the abnormal calcification within the breast and specimen imagery confirms a successful biopsy procedure in real-time, eliminating the need for repeat biopsies and providing you with peace of mind knowing the sample collected is sufficient for further pathological diagnosis.
